2012 Outward Bound

At the beginning of April, 12 UPBEAT members, three of their partners, and two Parkinson’s New Zealand staff members battled their way through the six-day Outward Bound course at Anikiwa in the Marlborough Sounds. None of them will ever be the same again.

The intensive regime of rock climbing, open-boat sailing, tramping, early morning runs, and cold-water swims was physically testing, but the real challenge for the participants was a mental one: to redefine their own self-imposed limits and come to realise they didn’t really know what they could do until they 'gave things a go.'

Many said the highlight of the course was the comradeship the UPBEAT group developed over the week. They all noted how important and inspiring it was to be part of a team and how much they appreciated the support the team offered.

“The group appeared to gel right from the start and came together to both support and encourage one another. An amazing experience as always! The instructors were awesome as neither knew much about Parkinson's but were willing to learn and then able to manipulate the course so that challenges were extended to all and support given as required. The facilities were great.

Once again an awesome group of people having a wonderful opportunity to reach and push their potential! We are so lucky to have this available to members.”
